  • Meeting More Neighbors

So last night we found a new way to meet neighbors...have the fire alarm in your building go off at ~11:30 at night (and in the middle of a thunderstorm) when almost everyone is home. :)

I had been asleep for less than an hour when I was woken up by the extremely loud alarm next to our bedroom (it was seriously loud...you couldn't really hear anything else over the alarm, but at least we know it works and we can't sleep through it). After we figured out that it was the entire building and not just our apartment (where we knew there was nothing wrong), we threw on some shoes, grabbed the keys and cell phones, and went over with the group standing by one of the side doors. We didn't actually go outside, because it was the middle of a thunderstorm and the caretaker's husband was almost finished with his walkthrough and hadn't seen evidence of a fire yet. He said that there was water leaking into one of the fire alarms by the elevator on the third floor and that was probably the cause of the alarm going off.

It took 20-25 minutes from the time the alarm started until it was shut off, and I felt really bad for people with small children (their poor eardrums!) because the noise was so loud and, unless you went out to your car and drove away, there really wasn't any place you could go to get totally away from the noise. After the alarm was shut off, it was probably over an hour before my ears finally stopped ringing and I could get back to sleep.

This morning when I went out to get the paper, the fire alarm lights in the hallway were still going off, but I'm thankful they were able to shut off the noise since there wasn't really a fire.

  • Steeler's Game

So tonight DrO and I went to the Steelers/Vikings game in Minneapolis with our friend Alektraland and her husband. It was the first time Alektraland and I had been to a Pro Football game and we had a lot of fun.

There were a bunch of Steelers fans sitting close to us and others were scattered across the stadium. Just about every section you looked in would have several terrible towels waving. We had the good luck to get seats close to the Steelers entrance onto the field, so we got to see all the players up close at the beginning and end of the game as well as halftime.

Below is a picture of DrO and I dressed up for the game.

It was sad that we didn't get to see Polamalu play, but it was still a good time with the Steelers keeping us wondering until there was under 20 seconds left and they got the field goal team out to kick. Reed made the field goal with 4 seconds left on the clock and then our special teams was able to stop the Vikings from getting far with the kickoff return thus ending the game.

  • Fitness Center

Our apartment complex just finished updates to their fitness center and had the grand opening on July 30th. It's small, but nice. There are two treadmills, two elliptical machines, a (recumbent) bike, and two weight machines. I'm excited about them getting an elliptical machine, because they can give you a great workout.

The problem with this workout room is that it's not air conditioned and it's quite hot outside during the day, so I can only last 10-15 minutes before I get so hot that I have to leave. Fortunately, this morning it was nice and cool outside at ~6:30, so I was able to finish my time with a nice walk outside to the park and back.

This afternoon we are off to the Mall of America for some shopping, so the exercise will continue while we walk around there.

  • herb garden

Last weekend DrO and I planted some herbs (mint, basil, oregano, parsley, cilantro, chives, and thyme) in a planter inside our apartment. A couple days ago we saw some small green things in the thyme pot and today there are shoots from where the basil is planted as well. This gives me hope that maybe we can grow something without me killing it.

Update (3/30): We now have oregano, cilantro, and parsley. We're still waiting on the mint and chives, but hopefully they'll come up soon.
